The Maldives Participates In The Seventy-Ninth Session of UNESCAP

The Maldives is participating in the Seventy-Ninth Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) held from 15th to 19th May 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. The theme for the 79th Commission Session is ‘Accelerating climate action in Asia and the Pacific for sustainable development’. This year’s session will be a great opportunity to strengthen regional cooperation on climate change faced in the Asia-Pacific region.

As part of the commission session, a thematic study will be undertaken by UNESCAP to outline the pathways that the Asia Pacific region needs to follow in order to transition towards a net-zero carbon future in support of sustainable development. The study will also focus on setting out the regional context of climate change and determining policies and actions that can be implemented in various sectors of the economy to comply with the global climate agenda.

This year’s Commission Session is attended by delegations from ESCAP member countries, associate members and independent organizations as well. The thematic discussions – which are the highlight of this year’s session - will seek ways to strengthen cooperative opportunities for the Asia-Pacific region as well.

Foreign Secretary Ahmed Latheef will represent the Maldives during the 79th session. As an active member of ESCAP, the Maldives will advocate the need for adequate, sustainable financing to address gaps in climate action and conduct more climate risk analysis and planning. Moreover, it will also strive to enhance solidarity in tackling the shared climate crisis.
