On Sunday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid together with Kadri Simson, EU Commissioner for Energy co-moderated the roundtable discussion during the EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum. The discussions focused on pursuing green opportunities and overcoming global challenges.

During his opening remarks, Minister Shahid highlighted the pressing need for a transition towards cleaner, reliable and climate-friendly energy sources. He underscored that political commitment, cooperation and partnerships are necessary to realize the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The roundtable discussion shed light on important topics such as making green energy affordable and available, promoting renewable energy and the need to address biodiversity loss, pollution and the growing energy demand of the Indo-Pacific region. In addition to this, they also noted the importance of partnerships in promoting energy diversification through increased investment and technology to achieve green transitions.

This roundtable served as a valuable platform for fostering dialogue between the Indo-Pacific and the EU on the urgency of climate change and its adverse impact on all countries. Three key challenges were highlighted during the discussions as barriers to achieving green tradition and addressing the climate change concern. They were Availability, Accessibility and Affordability.

Collaborations between the Indo-Pacific region and the European Union, facilitated by forums such as this roundtable are crucial in progressing towards achieving targets and pursuing sustainable development.
