At the wake of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, as a precautionary measure, the government of Maldives closed its borders to international tourist arrivals on March. Borders was reopened on 15th of July, however, at the beginning the number of tourist arrivals remained relatively low for a holiday destinoation of our repute. Since then, the numbers have been steadily picking up.
Back in October, the Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom revealed an ambitious goal to hit 100k tourist arrivals during the remainder of the year. At that time, it felt unrealistic, but, after a large influx of arrivals, the government was anticipating to welcome the 100,000th tourist since the border reopening by 16th December. Four days ahead of what was expected, today, the Maldives have welcomed the 100,000th tourist to arrive in the country since the border reopening.
A grand event was held at the Velana International Airport on the occasion at which the 100,000th tourist was identified by the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Maldives Immigration and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). The 100,000th tourist is Ms. Jasmin Burki, from Switzerland who had arrived to the Maldives via Emirates Airline.
Ms. Jasmin Burki was handed over a special gift pack awarded to her by Ministry of Tourism, Maldives Immigration and MACL. Additionally, a Holiday Voucher was presented to her by MMPRC. Following this, Ms. Jasmin Burki took a photo by the Official Jetty with the special “Instagram Frame'' which highlights that Maldives is the World’s Leading Destination of 2020.
It is now anticipated that 500k tourist arrivals will be recorded by Maldives by late December. Can we?
