On Sunday, Vice President Faisal Naseem attended an event organized by the High Commission of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in the Maldives to commemorate the Independence and National Day of Bangladesh. At the function held in Hotel Jen, the Vice President expressed his appreciation to the government of Bangladesh for its invaluable contributions to the national development of the Maldives.
In his address, the Vice President reflected on the strong bonds between both countries and recognized the contributions made by Bangladeshi expatriate workers to the socioeconomic development of the Maldives. In this regard, he added that the administration will be steadfast in protecting the rights of Bangladeshi workers in the Maldives and reaffirmed its continued commitment to remain a time-tested friend of the country.
During his speech, the Vice President also shed light o the rich history and culture of Bangladesh. On this note, he remarked that people of both countries share a close relationship based on shared customs, cultures, goodwill and interests in trade and maritime affairs long before the establishment of official diplomatic relations between both sides and before the two attained independence.
Speaking further, Vice President Faisal Naseem highlighted the tremendous sacrifices made for Bangladesh’s liberation and independence by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Vice President underscored Bangabandhu’s inspiring leadership and unwavering dedication to justice which led to the founding of Bangladesh in 1971.
In this way, he quoted a famous line from the momentous speech given by Bangabandhu on March 7, 1971, in which he asked for "every house to turn into a fortress” in the struggle for independence. The awe-inspiring quote had since been included in the UNESCO ‘Memory of the World Register”. The Maldives and Bangladesh initially established diplomatic relations on September 22nd, 1978.
