The President & First Lady Depart on an Official Visit to the UK

On Wednesday evening, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed departed on an official visit to the United Kingdom. Foreign Minister of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid will accompany the President and First Lady on the visit as well.

During the visit, the President and First Lady will attend the coronation ceremony of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilia which will take place over the weekend. The coronation ceremony will be held on May 6th at Westminster Abbey. Around 2,3000 people were sent invitations to attend the ceremony with approximately 100 Heads of State from around the world joining in.

King Charles III ascended the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last September. The last coronation ceremony took place on June 2nd, 1953, and was the first televised royal event in the history of the British Monarchy. With no coronations held for the past 70 years, King Charles III’s coronation is also the first coronation ceremony to be held in the twenty-first century.
