Maldives Police Service Holds Ceremony To Commemorate 90th Anniversary

On Saturday, Maldives Police Service held a special ceremony at the Hulhumale’ synthetic track to mark their 90th anniversary. The official function was attended by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed along with other notable invitees including Cabinet Ministers and senior officials from the Maldives National Defence Force and Maldives Police Service.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih underscored the significant improvements brought to policing during the past nine decades. In this regard, he noted the separation of the Maldives Police Service from the military and its establishment as an independent civil service. The President also stated that ensuring the quality of police services must always be regarded as a top priority by the government.

In his address, President Solih also highlighted the necessity of diversifying the police service to adapt to contemporary society as it undergoes societal changes and deals with new mindsets. On this note, he added that essential education and training must be provided for every member of the police force in their relevant fields. He further implored the police to stay vigilant against criminal activity from outside the nation.

Speaking further, the President remarked that police stations were established in 18 islands during the current administration, with an additional 100 islands provided with neighbourhood policing services. In this manner, he shared that the government is aiming to provide police services in all islands across the Maldives by the end of this year.

During the ceremony, the President also presented plaques of appreciation to long-standing employees and individuals who have tremendously contributed to the Maldives Police Service. Moreover, he also conferred the President’s Colour Medal to police officers and unveiled the ‘Commemorative Coin’ that honours the 90th anniversary of the police service. The Maldives Police Service was initially established on March 29, 1933.
