On Wednesday, the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Republic of Burundi signed an agreement allowing mutual exemption of visa requirements for nationals of both countries. With this, Maldivian and Burundian travellers will be exempted from visas for single and multiple entry, exit and transit for a period of 30 days.
The visa waiver agreement was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives by Her Excellency, Thilmeeza Hussain, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations. Similarly, the Permanent Representative of Burundi to the United Nations, His Excellency Zéphyrin Maniratanga represented the Government of Burundi during the signing event held in New York at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations.
At the talks held during the signing ceremony, Permanent Representative Thilmeeza expressed her gratitude to the Government of Burundi for its commitment towards strengthening the existing bilateral relations between the two countries. She also conveyed her hope that the signing of the visa waiver agreement will increase people-to-people contact between the Maldives and Burundi and pave the way for more beneficial engagement. In his turn, the Permanent Representative of Burundi also expressed his interest and eagerness in consolidating bilateral ties with the Maldives.
