Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has announced that it will be commencing the sale of bin-liners to the public. Bin-liners are specially designed plastic bags used for waste disposal. The announcement comes at a timely moment when the government has begun levying taxes on plastic bags. From April 18th onwards, a fee of MVR 2 per plastic bag supplied will be charged by all GST-registered businesses.
In a tweet shared by the corporation, WAMCO stated that the bin liners will be available for sale starting from Thursday, 27th April 2023. As of now, three sizes of bin liners will be introduced into the market with prices ranging between MVR 35- 165. Each size will be launched in two colours, with green bin liners designated for perishable waste while black bin liners are for non-perishable and other waste.
The three bin liner sizes and their prices are:
1. Large (L): 100 pcs available for MVR 35
2. Double XL (XXL): 100 pcs available for MVR 165
3. Triple XL (XXXL): 50 pcs available for MVR 165
Starting this upcoming Thursday onwards, the bin liners will be sold from all of WAMCO’s customer front offices. WAMCO has also opened the opportunity for interested entrepreneurs to carry out wholesale and retail services for bin liners. Bin liners will be exempted from the tax levy as taxing plastic bags used for waste management and disposal are exempted from the law.
