Waste Management Centres To Be Established In Four Islands

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has contracted Vehi-Con Builders Private Limited to develop waste management centres in four islands of the Maldives. The islands chosen for this project are Nilandhoo in Faafu Atoll, Maaenboodhoo in Dhaalu Atoll, and Thimarafushi and Guraidhoo in Thaa Atoll. The project is funded under the World Bank’s grant assistance to the Maldives via the Maldives Clean Environment Project.

The contract agreement was signed last week during a special ceremony held at the Environment Ministry. The agreement was signed on behalf of the Ministry by Deputy Minister, Mohamed Ansar while the Managing Director of Vehi-Con Builders Private Limited, Ahmed Rasheed represented the company during the signing event.

Under this project, Vehi-Con Builders is tasked with the establishment of new waste management centres in Maaenboodhoo, Thimarafushi and Guraidhoo islands and upgrading the existing one in Nilandhoo island. The four centres are scheduled to be completed within 180 days and will greatly resolve waste management issues on the four islands.

Each centre facilitated under this project will consist of office spaces, waste disposal and hazardous waste disposal areas as well as a storage space and bathrooms. Once the project is finished, the islands will be able to segregate renewable waste from perishable waste and carry out waste treatments. It will also allow island communities to dispose of waste responsibly and effectively.
