Following the travel ban to the country as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the island nation; Maldives, reopened its borders for international tourist arrivals on 15th July. Qatar Airways is the first international airline to resume operations to Maldives and also is the airline carrying the most number of passengers to the country.
Operator of the Velana International Airport, Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL), announced via social media yesterday that Qatar Airways will be commencing a new frequency effective of today, 10th December 2020. Accordingly, the airline will be operating daily 2 flights to Velana International Airport. They will be increasing the number to daily 3 flights starting from 17th December which will remain in effect until 10th January 2021.
Moreover, Maldives and the State of Qatar has established a travel bubble between the countries through Qatar Airways. Consequently, it will allow tourists from both the countries to travel freely between the countries without the requirement of a quarantine or a self-isolation period.
Since the border reopening, over 90k tourist arrivals have been recorded by the Ministry of Tourism, up to date. The Maldives expects to hit the 100k tourist arrivals mark by 16th of December.
