On Monday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid hosted a meeting with the President and members of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). The meeting took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the morning hours of yesterday, 10th April 2023.
At the meeting, the President of HRCM, Mariyam Muna briefed the Foreign Minister on the various works undertaken by the Commission over the last three years. She shared with the Minister how those efforts have helped improve the human rights situation in the Maldives. Both parties also spoke about the importance of protecting and promoting human rights at home and explored avenues of cooperation and collaboration in areas of shared interests and goals.
During the meeting, Minister Shahid reiterated the Maldivian Government’s commitment to upholding the values of human rights and democracy and agreed to closely work together with HRCM in areas of mutual interest in the international fora as well. The Foreign Minister was joined at the meeting by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Joint Secretary Mariyam Midhfa Naeem and Chief General Service Officer Mizna Waheed.
The delegation from the HRCM consisted of the Vice President of HRCM, Dr Ahmed Adham Abdulla, Commissioners Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq, Moomina Waheed and Samaau Ahmed Najeeb and the Secretary General of HRCM, Aminath Naushan Abdul Muhaimin. The HRCM was the first-ever independent and autonomous statutory body incepted in the Maldives under Chapter 7 of the Constitution of the Maldives 2008.
