The Maldives Partakes In The Indo-Pacific Regional Meeting of The Summit for Democracy 2023

Today, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Khaleel participated and represented the Maldives in the Indo-Pacific Regional Meeting of the Summit for Democracy 2023. The meeting was convened by the Government of the Republic of Korea, under the theme of ‘Challenges and Progress in Addressing Corruption’.

During the meeting, the State Minister delivered the national statement and reiterated Maldives’ firm commitment to fight against corruption. He underscored the adverse effects of corruption on countries by stating that it erodes public trust, undermines the rule of law and hinders economic progress for many countries plagued by corruption. In this regard, he stressed the necessity for international cooperation in combating corruption worldwide.

Moreover, State Minister Khaleel also looked into the Government of Maldives’ multi-faceted approach towards tackling corruption. He noted that the government is driving efforts to combat corruption by strengthening legal and institutional frameworks, promoting transparency and encouraging public participation within the country. Likewise, the Maldives also benefits from building partnerships with the global community by being able to observe best practices and lessons learned that will aid the process in the future.

The meeting was hosted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Park Jin and was attended by Foreign Ministers from the region. State Minister Khaleel was accompanied by Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Adam Hamid.

The Indo-Pacific Regional Meeting forms part of the Second Summit for Democracy. It provides a valuable opportunity for governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector to engage in discussions and exchange dialogues on advancing the shared vision of addressing corruption in the region and leading towards a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
