On Tuesday, the cabinet of the Maldives deliberated on the rollout of the new version of the Government E-letter Management System (GEMS) Workspace and the revisions brought to the messaging and correspondence guidelines. The paper was presented to the cabinet by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology. The cabinet meeting took place at the President’s Office during the morning hours of 28th March 2023.
Deliberating on the paper submitted, the cabinet members underscored the importance of upgrading GEMS to stay up to date with technological advancements. The cabinet also reached a consensus that the rollout of the new version of GEMS will take place in four phases. The existing version of GEMS currently in use was launched in 2010. The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology noted that the GEMS framework and technology needed to be upgraded since management and support of this version have become difficult.
The new version of GEMS Workspace software is significantly improved from the current version and is designed to be a stand-alone option with no additional support software required. Making room for message templates and electronic signatures, the software eliminates the need for printing. Once the roll-out is completed businesses, NGOs ad individuals will be able to access the software and exchange correspondences with the government seamlessly.
