Maldives To Receive Support Under UN’s Early Warnings for All Action Plan

The Maldives have been included in the first list of countries due to receive coordinated and targeted support under the United Nation’s Early Warnings for All action plan. The list consisted of countries that are at higher risk and vulnerable to natural disasters including small island developing states like the Maldives. The global initiative aims to ensure that everyone on Earth is protected by early warnings latest by 2027.

According to current trends and statistics, it is recorded that the number of disasters has increased by a factor of five in the past 50 years, partly as a result of human-induced climate change which is causing drastic changes in weather patterns. Without no action taken, the occurrence of medium to large-scale catastrophic events is projected to reach 560 a year which in turn will make emergency response efforts more difficult, uncertain and complex in many parts of the world.

To accelerate and fast-track actions in this work, the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres conveyed an Advisory Panel on March 21st, 2023. This panel constituted various UN agencies, multilateral development banks, humanitarian and civil society organizations as well as insurance and IT companies. By bringing a diverse set of collaborators under one roof, the UN hopes to inject more political, technological and financial support into the Early Warnings for All action plan, expediting its progress on becoming a reality for everyone.

In the coming months, upscaled coordinated action will be observed in 30 at-risk countries which include a host of least developing countries and small island developing states. Alongside these efforts, the UN’s existing actions and initiatives will continue around the world, building resilience and edging closer to realizing the pledges made by the campaign and ensuring a life-saving reality for millions of people in the most vulnerable countries.

“Now it is time for us to deliver results. Millions of lives are hanging in the balance, It is unacceptable that the countries and peoples that have contributed the least to creating the crisis are paying the heaviest prices,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
