MCS Will Only Accept Digital Payments Starting Next Month

In recent times, the heights the digital world has reached up to is almost insurmountable. There is so much one can do at the comfort at ones’ home. People everywhere are fusing the digital world and the physical world to achieve advancement of us, as humans.

This is precisely why I want to take a moment to appreciate Maldives Customs Service (MCS) in implementing digital means to carry out its functions and responsibilities. MCS has reported that their decision to cease the acceptance of physical payments, as a whole. Payments that are to be settled with MCS will now have to be settled digitally through Customs Portal, Customs Pay or MRGTS, starting from 1st October 2020. Receipts of all digitally settled payments will be available to see for their customers through the portal at any time.

MCS hopes that the introduction of digital payments will minimize the Maldivian economy’s dependency on paper notes and cheques. Currently, digital payments are deemed safer as it increases accountability and tracking. They are also aiming to normalize using digital means throughout the nation, especially considering our geographical landscape of scatted islands, resulting ease of access from persons from remote islands.

It was also highlighted by MCS that the Ministry of Finance had appealed to organizations to introduce digital payments, prior to this.

I hope that the introduction of complete digital payment by MCS would inspire other organizations to take this step, to get in times with modern technology and highly applaud MCS for this effort.

On a side note, the best part for me in this is; we don’t have to queue up a line at the MCS office.
