Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has successfully completed key events of its Binaaru Campaign, launched on 4th March 2023 by Minister of Defence, Uz. Mariya Ahmed Didi. The campaign focuses on promoting safety, security and health within the Velana International Airport (VIA) community and paved way for a series of events addressing these three core areas.
The Binaaru Campaign was inaugurated with a safety run which was held on 4th March 2023. The main purpose of the run was to promote a healthy lifestyle among staff and relevant stakeholders of VIA. Following this, a staff health screening event took place from 5th-7th March 2023. Over 500 staff participated in the event where BMI, blood sugar, cardiovascular risk, eye and dental check-ups were provided. This helped create awareness about the importance of health and fitness among the VIA work force.
As part of the campaign, the MACL Safety, Security and Compliance departments also conducted 18 insightful training sessions and awareness programs for staff. This includes providing basic safety training for airline handling agents and airport representatives, carrying out awareness sessions on ‘Safety & Security’ and identifying suspicious behaviour as well as conducting SOP and system training and training sessions for airlines to follow airside safety standards and airline dispatch.
The aforementioned events were carried out in partnership with Manta Airlines, Villa Air and Maldives National Defence Force. More than 300 staff and stakeholders partook in these fruitful sessions, further augmenting its success. Alongside these activities, the campaign also launched a safety and security awareness quiz with the purpose of increasing awareness of safety & security procedures within the aviation industry. 600+ airport staff actively contributed to the quizzes as well.
Under this campaign, an airport familiarisation tour was carried out for 60 students from the Centre of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) too. During the tour, the students were informed about various airport operations and were given the chance to visit and explore various office divisions and terminals of VIA.
Additionally, the fire prevention team from the airport emergency services conducted a session for MACL’s corporate office fire wardens. The session trained the staff to safely evacuate the building during a fire emergency. Likewise, MACL’s safety, security and compliance department together with Parley, Airport Police and MNDF conducted a successful vector control and cleaning event on 9th March 2023. A total of 9 tonnes of waste were collected from 5 airport zones under this initiative.
