The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has announced that the waste disposal fees of Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) will be included in the Electricity utility bill of State Electric Company Limited (STELC) starting from April onwards. The change was brought to encourage more people to pay their waste disposal payments on due time to WAMCO.
WAMCO carries out waste disposal in the Greater Male’ region, catering to over 53,000 households. However, approximately 37% of households pay regular fees to the corporation which has become a major barrier to effective regular waste collection and management. Therefore, to resolve the issue and bring a permanent solution to hindrances caused by it, the Environmental Ministry has decided to integrate the fee into the Electricity bill.
A statement published by the Ministry disclosed that waste disposal payments will be incorporated into the utility bill of STELCO effective from April 1st onwards. There will be no increment in waste collection fees owing to this change and households already registered to the WAMCO portal will not have to re-register for the services. Regardless of this, individuals will have to separately pay for the disposal of large waste from households.
