On 10th March 2023, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met with the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The two heads of state held a meeting at the Office of the Federal President in Berlin, Germany. The meeting forms part of the official visit the President is currently undertaking to Germany.
During the meeting, President Solih commended Germany’s leadership in the European Union (E.U) and spoke about avenues of support in negotiating tariff rates for Maldivian fish exports. Moreover, the President also brought to attention the easing of visa facilitations for Maldivian travellers. Both leaders also expressed interest in expanding collaborations in prominent areas such as climate change, renewable energy opportunities, aviation, and transport.
In addition to this, both Presidents also exchanged dialogues on strengthening the bilateral relations between Maldives and Germany and looked into enhancing cooperation and collaboration in areas of mutual interest. The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to continue working together for the mutual benefit and common good of the people of both countries. The Maldives and Germany initially established diplomatic relations on July 5th, 1966.
