Agreement Signed To Develop Gan International Airport

On Monday, the Ministry of Economic Development awarded the Gan International Airport Development project to Renaatus Projects Private Limited. The agreement was signed yesterday between members of Addu International Airport Private Limited and representatives from Renaatus Projects. The project valued at USD 29.7 million is facilitated under the Exim Bank of India’s loan financing.

The scope of this project includes the establishment of a state-of-the-art passenger terminal with a capacity to serve 1.5 million passengers annually. Some of the featured facilities and services available at the terminal include access to duty-free outlets, renowned restaurant chains and lounges associated with different companies. Moreover, the project also includes the development of cold storage and cargo facilities, a control tower, and a fire station as well as roads and parking zones on the premises of the airport.

The project is scheduled to be completed within two years and will serve as the main gateway to the South of the Maldives when operations commence. The airport will serve as a link to the southern atolls of the country with direct international flights operated between points. As a result, it will lead to more resorts, hotels and guesthouses will establish in the region which in the long run can bring economic prosperity to the South.

The current administration plans to transform Addu City as an economic hub in the Maldives and many efforts are being put in place to realize this vision. This includes establishing roads and drainage systems and harbour development and land reclamation projects. Works are being done to boost tourism in the atoll as well such as increasing bed capacity in tourist establishments.
