Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has kicked off a safety, security and health campaign at Velana International Airport, the gateway to the Maldives. Named ‘Binaaru’, the campaign was officially launched by Minister of Defence, Uza. Mariya Ahmed Didi at a special ceremony held to mark the occasion.
The launching ceremony was attended by dignitaries from various aviation authorities in the Maldives and MACL including the CEO of the Civil Aviation Authority, Hussain Jaleel, Managing Director & CEO of MACL, Mahjoob Shujau and the Deputy Managing Director of MACL, Ibrahim Thoha. The senior management of MACL and other airport stakeholders also took part in the event.
Under this campaign, MACL will enforce occupational health and safety laws within the workforce at Velana International Airport, leading by example for other state-owned enterprises in the nation. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Mariya Didi commended the tremendous effort carried out by the MACL team and other stakeholders during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure a safe and secure environment and noted how it is still continuously being done.
The Managing Director and CEO of MACL, Mahjoob Shujau remarked that with the new infrastructure development at VIA, the company is giving a high priority to developing safety and security features in accordance with international regulatory bodies such as IATA and ICAO. He further emphasized that MACL is investing in new technologies to minimize accidents in the working environment and excess points and increase surveillance at VIA.
The campaign will run from March 4th to 9th and many activities are planned for the duration. To initiate the campaign, a safety run was held at Hulhumale’ Central Park on March 4th, 2023. Other events in the pipeline include staff health screening and awareness sessions, airport tours for school children, online quizzes to create awareness of airport safety and security and airport cleaning and vector control activities.
