On Monday, three Ambassadors of three respective countries, namely, Belgium, Sudan and Sweden presented their credentials to the President of the Maldives, His Excellency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The ceremony took place yesterday at the President’s Office in Male’ during the hours of morning. Following the ceremony, the President met with each Ambassador and exchanged greetings and views on notable points of cooperation.
Belgian Ambassador
The new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to the Republic of Maldives is His Excellency, Didier Vanderhasselt. After the welcome reception, President Solih congratulated the Ambassador on assuming office and spoke on enhancing diplomatic relations between the two nations during his tenure. Ambassador Vanderhasselt and President Solih also discussed avenues of cooperation in both bilateral and international spheres and pledged to support each other in areas of climate change, renewable energy, tourism and international trade.
Before concluding the meeting, the President wished the Ambassador success in his duties and expressed confidence and eagerness in working closely in the coming future.
Sudanese Ambassador
The newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to the Republic of Maldives is His Excellency, Abdallah Omer Bashir Elhusain. During the meeting that followed, the President conveyed his congratulations to the Ambassador and spoke on various matters of bilateral cooperation. Both parties exchanged dialogues on enhancing trade and investments, and touched on subjects of fisheries, agriculture, tourism and climate change.
President Solih also noted that Maldives grants on-arrival visas and expressed hope for easing travel for Maldivians to Sudan in an effort to improve people-to-people interactions. Moreover, Ambassador Elhusain and the President discussed ways to cooperate in the international fora as well on matters of global importance. The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthen relations and working together in areas of mutual interest and on the multilateral front.
Swedish Ambassador
The new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Republic of Maldives is His Excellency, Jan Thesleff. In the meeting held after the ceremony, President Solih congratulated the Ambassador on his appointment and affirmed the close bilateral ties on both aides. Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Thesleff mentioned that many Maldivian students are pursuing higher education in Swedish institutions.
This year marks the 45th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries and both the President and Ambassador reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen long-standing bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
