Government Publishes Strict Regulations On Spa Operations In The Maldives

The Ministry of Economic Development has published vigorous regulations for spa operators in the Maldives. The newly-published regulations outline the operation, maintenance and advertisement of spas in the Maldives. With this regulation in effect, the Economic Ministry has asked all spa operators to reregister their establishments at the business portal of the ministry starting from February 21st, 2023.

The regulations released by the Ministry clearly state that spa employees must not disclose any personal photos, videos, or audio of their establishments.  Moreover, it highlights that advertisements related to the spa must adhere to and be within the appropriate social and cultural standards of the Maldives.

The Ministry has given spa operators a period of 90 days to reregister to the portal. The regulations also proclaim that foreign workers must have proper work permits to work at spa establishments, which will be checked and evaluated by relevant authorities. Any spa establishment that violates the regulations will be fined a fee of USD 652 with concerning authorities holding the right to terminate permits given to such establishments.
