Maafaru International Airport is the first international airport established at the northern region of Maldives. The airport is located in the island of Maafaru in Noonu Atoll and was formally inaugurated about a year ago, on 1st December 2019. The airport is operated by Island Aviation Services Limited. It has the capacity to accommodate large aircrafts such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
Since the Maldives reopened its borders, the airport has seen a significant increase in jet landings. According to Mr. Mumthaz Ali, the General Manager of Maafaru International Airport, they welcomed 15 private jets in July, 14 private jets in August, 13 private jets in September and went on to see a spike in October with 41 private jets having been welcomed. Astonishingly, in the month of November, the airport saw 65 jet landings which accounts to an 59% increase.
The General Manager also noted that so far in December, the airport has welcomed 18 private jets. They are anticipating that the numbers will reach up to 100 by the end of the month.
Persons arriving to Maldives by private jets has been given permit to enter since 1st June 2020. As the we are passing through a peak season attributed to the winter holidays, it is projected that private jet arrivals to the country will increase as well.
