Government Introduces Five-Year National Cancer Control Plan 2022-2026

Last Thursday, the Ministry of Health launched a five-year National Cancer Control Plan for the Maldives targeted between 2022-2026. The National Cancer Control Plan was unveiled at a special ceremony by the Minister of Health, Ahmed Naseem together with the Representative of World Health Organization (WHO) to the Maldives, Dr. Nazneen Anwar.

Speaking at the ceremony, Health Minister Naseem threw some insight into the statistics and stated that 17% of deaths in the Maldives are caused by cancer and the number of people seeking cancer treatment has alarmingly increased over the years. He noted that the majority of people can reduce the risk and incidence of cancer by bringing positive changes to their lifestyle and the government aims to create a healthful community through this initiative.

Under this National Cancer Control Plan, the government will start rigorously inspecting imported food products and relocating fibreglass businesses. Moreover, it will work with all relevant institutions and organizations to mitigate the causes of cancer and eliminate challenges faced in delivering the utmost care for cancer patients.

The plan is set to be implemented starting from April 2023 and outlines specific objectives to be achieved. This includes increasing efforts in prevention through health promotion, enabling early detection and prompt diagnosis, and facilitating evidence-based treatment without financial hindrances. Additionally, the Health Ministry will also work towards expanding coverage of palliative and supportive care and establishing a cancer registry as well as drive country-specific research in the Maldives.
