Government of Japan To Provide Emergency Support Vehicle & Dewatering Equipment to Maldivian Red Crescent

On Thursday, the Government of Japan committed a grant of JP¥ 4,381,452 (approximately USD 40,569) for the provision of an emergency support vehicle and dewatering equipment to the Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC) branch in Kulhudhuffushi City. The aid was facilitated under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme.

The Grant Contract was signed between the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Mrs. Takeuchi Midori and the Secretary General of the MRC, Ms. Fathimath Himya on Thursday, 9th February 2023.

Under this contract agreement, funding will be arranged for the procurement of a Toyota Hilux 4WD Double vehicle to support emergency response operations in the Kulhudhuffushi City Unit, particularly in disasters such as flooding and accidents to minimize delays in deployment timings. Moreover, the assistance also paves way for the procurement of dewatering equipment such as water hoses and water pumps.

The GGP scheme founded in 1996, forms part of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) which aims to empower people at grassroots levels. The GGP scheme is implemented in the Maldives by the Embassy of Japan in Maldives. This scheme has brought tremendous improvements to key areas of the country such as education, health, transportation and energy, aligning with the goal of bringing sustainable development to the Maldives.
