MTCC Completes Shore Protection Project of Kolhufushi Island In Meemu Atoll

On Sunday, Maldives Transport & Contracting Company (MTCC) fully completed the shore protection project on Kolhufushi island in Meemu atoll. The project was contracted to the company by the Government of Maldives for a value of MVR 22.9 million.

For a very long time, the residents of Kolhufushi island have experienced coastal erosion from various areas of the island. This poses many difficulties for the residents especially since the island is known to be an agricultural ground. Addressing these concerns, MTCC has undertaken shore protection works in four different areas of the island, bringing relief to the islanders.

As such the scope of the project included several dredging operations.  Swimming area dredging operations of a 5,757 cbm area were carried out on the site and central waste area dredging operations of an area spanning 4,108 cbm also took place. Moreover, a 202m breakwater was constructed and a revetment measuring 518m was established as part of the project. The completion of the shore protection project is set to solve the long-lasting coastal erosion issues faced by the residents.
