Maldives Supports India’s Candidature to the UN Security Council

On Monday, the Government of the Maldives announced their support for India’s candidature to a non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council for the term 2028-2029. The election is planned to take place during the eighty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly in June of 2027.

The decision to support the neighbouring country was taken following the official visit undertaken by the Minister of External Affairs of India, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to the Maldives from the 18-19 of January 2023. Maldives’ declaration of strong support for India is rooted in the close bonds and long-standing partnership and friendship that exists between both countries.

Moreover, India has on multiple occasions demonstrated strong and effective leadership in maintaining international peace and security and has upheld the values and principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The Government of Maldives also expressed confidence that India will become a voice for all developing countries on the Security Council, and will continue making meaningful contributions towards the global discourse on peace and security in the upcoming years.
