Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives Kick-offs Girls To Code Laamu Edition

On Tuesday, Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives jointly announced that they have initiated Girls to Code Laamu Edition. The Girls to Code programme teaches participants basic coding skills by using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Even suitable for girls with no prior background in coding, the knowledge acquired during the classes will be applied to create a website of their own at the end of the program.

The classes will be conducted virtually over a period of two months, starting on 22nd January 2023. With a focus on girls aged between 14 and 20 years, the objective of this programme is to inspire and empower more women to join STEM Fields, particularly technology fields. This would in turn decrease the gender gap between such fields in the future as well.

Speaking on the launching in Laamu, Bishaara Hameed, Manager Corporate Social Responsibility at Dhiraagu remarked “Whichever career path you may choose, you will find coding will become a beneficial skill that would give you confidence and open doors to a world of possibilities for your future.”

The President of Women in Tech Maldives, Mariyam Asna Saeed commented “The ‘Girls to Code’ programme will teach participants very important skills – apart from the coding language used in building websites, the programme will also teach problem-solving skills and different ways to approach issues.”

The Laamu Edition marks the fourth programme of the ‘Girls to Code’ series which was inaugurated in 2019. The first edition took place at Fuvahmulah City while the second and third editions were conducted in Gdh, Thinadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi City respectively.
