Causeways To Be Built In Five Islands Of Laamu Atoll

On Sunday, the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted Maldives Transport & Contracting Company (MTCC) to build causeways between five different islands of Laamu Atoll. The agreement was signed between the Director General of the Planning Ministry, Shaana Farooq and the Chief Executive Officer of MTCC, Adam Azim during a special signing ceremony held at the Ministry.

Under this large-scale initiative, MTCC will be undertaking two causeway projects that will connect some islands of Laamu with others. The first causeway project will link L.Hithadhoo, L. Mendhoo and L. Kunahandhoo whereas the second project will integrate L. Kalaidhoo and L. Dhanbidhoo with a single causeway. With this, it would make transportation more accessible by land and enable residents to travel between islands more conveniently for various services.

The causeway project of L. Hithadhoo, L. Mendhoo and L. Kunahandhoo was awarded to MTCC for MVR 81, 22,471.36 and is scheduled to be completed within 500 days. The scope of this project includes establishing a 390 metres revetment and constructing a 57.5m causeway connecting L. Hithadhoo and L. Mendhoo. Likewise, an additional causeway spanning 157.5m will also be linking L. Mendhoo to L. Kunahandhoo.

Additionally, the causeway project joining L. Kalaidhoo and L. Dhanbidhoo were contracted to MTCC for a project value of MVR 155,941,090.92 which is set to be finished within 550 days. As part of this project, a 271 metres revetment will be installed and a 225m causeway will feature between Kalaidhoo and Dhanbidhoo islands.
