Maldives Partakes In Fifth Intersessional Meeting of the Human Rights Council

On Thursday, the Maldives participated in the Fifth Intersessional Meeting of the Human Rights Council on Human Rights and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development held in Geneva, Switzerland. The theme of the meeting was ‘Overcoming multiple crises: realizing the SDGs through a human right enhancing economy’.

The President of the Human Rights Council, Her Excellency Ms. Antonia Urrejola and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Türk addressed the meeting. Maldives was represented by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN Office in Geneva, His Excellency Dr. Asim Ahmed.

During his statement, he underscored that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development should be the guiding framework for ending poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring peace and security for all. In this regard, he highlighted that the promotion and protection of human rights is one of the fundamental pillars of the Maldives foreign policy and as a country holding membership of the Human Rights Council, the nation will continue to advocate for it at home and overseas.

The 2023 inter-sessional meeting is the fifth in a series of inter-sessional meetings of the Human Rights Council on human rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The meeting sheds light on the importance of integrating human rights into the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and discussed the socio-economic impact of several crises in the contemporary world.
