Maldives Sees Increase in Rediscoverers of the Island Nation by 66% in November 2020

Maldives is one of the most hyped leisure holidays in the world. The country proudly welcomes millions of tourists every year, however, this year, at the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in Maldives, government authorities had come to decision of closing our borders for international arrivals in order to contain the rapid spread of the virus. With significant recovery, borders were reopened on 15th July. Since then, November was one which was definitely stood out more than the others.

In the month of November, tourist arrivals increased by 66% with a total of 35,759 persons arriving to the country. The maximum number of tourist arrivals counted on a single day was 3399 whilst the minimum was counted as 569. Since the border reopening, the top tourist markets have been Russia, India and the United Kingdom, respectively.

In comparison to November 2019, some markets had managed to break records as well with significant increase for the same period. These consists of Egypt, Kazakhstan, Russia, Brazil and Ukraine.

Most importantly, on November Maldives has been crowned as the World’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards 2020. This is remarkable achievement, considering the impacts the global coronavirus pandemic had on the tourism industry as a whole.

Maldives is expecting to reach a minimum target of 100k tourist arrivals by 16th December 2020.
