On Tuesday, ADK Hospital officially opened the first Hyperbaric Treatment Unit in the Maldives, expanding its portfolio of services as a private hospital. The unit was inaugurated at a special ceremony held at ADK hospital by Chief of Honour, Minister of Tourism Dr Adbdulla Mausoom. The ceremony was also attended by the Chief Medical Officer of ADK, Dr Abdulla Niyaf.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a specialized treatment that deploys a combination of elevated ambient pressure and concentrated oxygen. Primarily used in the treatment of decompression sickness, the therapy can also be utilized in healing burns, non-healing wounds and etc. Prior to the inauguration, only four decompression chambers were in the country at 4 island resorts.

In his opening remarks, the Chief Medical Officer of ADK, Dr Abdulla Niyaf noted that the establishment of the unit brings great joy to the doctors and members of the public. He then went on to introduce the Hyperbaric Treatment Unit, detailing the services provided by HBOT.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Tourism Dr Abdulla Mausoom underscored the importance of having a decompression chamber in a healthcare facility in the Maldives as the country is renowned for its dive-safe practices and world-class dive sites. He also remarked that a unit in the capital will give relief to the tourism industry, especially with the growing demand for tourism activities.

The ceremony was concluded with a demonstration of the HBOT after which PADI Course Director & Managing Director of Diving Desk, Adam Ashraf delivered his speech. In his address, he highlighted that as a diver he teaches his peers to avoid decompression completely and it is his prayer that no diver ever has to use the HBOT. Nevertheless, he commented that it makes him happy that the treatment is available and accessible to all in unfortunate circumstances where such an accident occurs.

Three doctors from the hospital underwent special training in Singapore to operate the Hyperbaric treatment unit. A team of nurses and support staff have also been trained to operate the unit alongside the doctors.
