The largest local bank operating in the Maldives, Bank of Maldives Plc (BML), is one of the greatest supporter of community development projects in the country. They introduced their ‘Aharenge Bank Community Fund’; a campaign which targets to empower local individuals and NGOs to contribute to their communities by way of sustainable projects. Under the campaign, the bank provides funding for proposals presenting ideas of sustainable community projects. All winning proposals are granted MVR 50,000 to transform their ideas into reality.
In this regard, an idea pitched in was the establishment of a Community Park in the island of Kanditheemu in Shaviyani Atoll, which was opened yesterday. The park consists of a barbeque area and fish cutting platform with tables and benches in addition to a play area for children and an outdoor gym accessible to all age groups. It is also equipped with beach huts, swings, sun beds and an outdoor shower for the purpose of making it convenient for people using the area for picnic purposes.
The proponent, Mr. Jinan Mohamed Shameem, states that this is a dream project for the island. It seems the idea for it stemmed through the want of creating an inclusive environment for all members of the community and to offer a natural space to bring the community together for recreation and relaxation.
