The Addu City Land Reclamation Project Has Kick-Offed

The Addu City Council has stated that the fieldwork for the land reclamation project in Addu City has kick-offed in the city. Valued at USD 84 billion, the Addu Cit land reclamation project was awarded to the Dutch company Van Oord India Private Limited and is carried out via a direct line of credit from the Exim Bank of India.

Under this project, Van Oord India Pvt Ltd will reclaim land from all the major areas of Addu including Hithadhoo, Maradhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo as well as the two separate islands located within the lagoon. The land is reclaimed for the purpose of widening local tourism in the city with the new land utilized for tourism development and operations. The project is forecasted to be finished in 18 months (1.5 years).

In addition to this, land reclamation projects are also being conducted on Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo of Addu city by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and are featured as part of the major project. MTCC will be reclaiming a total of 194.3 hectares of land under the initiative and will be completing an 11 km road embankment to protect the area from coastal erosion.
