Maldives Assumes Membership of The Human Rights Council For The Term 2023-2025

 On 1st January 2023, the Maldives assumed its membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council for the new term 2023-2025. The Maldives was elected for the seat on the Human Rights Council on 11th October 2022 in New York, representing the Asia Pacific group.

On assuming membership, the Maldives stated that it will be guided by the principles of human rights, democracy and good governance and will be putting forward climate action in its term, which underlines all necessary areas of the Maldives’ foreign policy. During its time at the council, Maldives will work towards making advancements in prominent areas of human rights with the true spirit of multilateralism embodied in its efforts.

Moreover, it will also contribute to the strengthening of national mechanisms and government institutions on various levels to mainstream and uphold human rights. The Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Offices in Geneva, Dr Asim Ahmed will be serving as the Vice President of the Human Rights Council for 2023, representing the Asia Pacific Group.

The United Nations Human Rights Council is a body of the United Nations founded on March 15th, 2006. The mission of the council is to promote and protect human rights around the world and appoints 47 members for three-year terms based on a regional group basis. It is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations, through which member states discuss human rights conditions in the UN member states.
