HDC Begins Works To Develop Co-Living Housing Building In Hulhumale’

Pioneering an innovative solution for students, Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has begun the works to establish ‘Co-Living Housing’ building in Hulhumale’. The project has been contracted to Rotime Engineering & Technology Co., Limited and the groundbreaking ceremony was held last week. As part of this new concept, the building will feature single and twinning co-share quarters along with other essential facilities for residents.

HDC stated that the main purpose of establishing such a building is to provide affordable housing to students and people living by themselves in the Greater Male’ region. Once the project is completed various services will be available for residents to avail. This includes an outdoor gym, pantry, and a designated kitchen on every floor. Moreover, laundry facilities and shops will be established within the building for use as well.

Set to be built 14-storeys tall on a 16,934.07 square feet plot of land, the building will consist of twinning sharing quarters from the 2nd floor to the 9th floor while the rest of the floor will comprise single rooms. The quarters will be only rented to Maldivian nationals only and will be in the newly urbanized area of Hulhumale phase II.

Prior to the decision of establishing a co-living housing unit, HDC conducted a survey in the Greater Male’ region. The findings of the survey depicted that settlers in the region particularly for educational and work purposes spend on average MVR 5000 alone on rent. Moreover, over 56% of survey participants showed interest in the establishment of this project with the majority stating that they are likely to reside in such quarters for more than a year. Hence, the development of such a facility will bring much ease to the populations settled in the Greater Male region.
