Waste Management Facilities To Be Established In Three Islands

Today, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology signed agreements to establish contemporary waste management facilities in three islands namely, Th. Kinbidhoo, L. Dhanbidhoo and M. Mulah. The project was contracted to Lyco Construction Company Private Limited at a total value of MVR 11,569,542.75. At the signing ceremony held today, the agreement was signed between the Deputy Minister of the Environmental Ministry, Mohamed Ansaar and the Director of Lyco Construction Company, Mariyam Layya Riyaz.

The waste management facilities are set to be established within six months from the date of initiation of works. Once the project is completed, all three islands will have the capacity to segregate waste, store reusable waste and transport waste to regional waste management facilities for effective disposal. Hence, the development of the facility will pave way for more efficient waste management as well as mitigate the problems caused by the burning of waste and accumulation of litter on the islands.

The Environmental Ministry stated that these island-level waste management facilities will bring many positive changes to the health and environment of the islands and lead the way to economic prosperity. Build to meet modern standards of waste management, the facilities are designed with spacious interiors, office space, washrooms, a storage area and allotted locations for storing segregated waste and hazardous waste. Additionally, a weighing scale to measure the mass of waste collection will be installed in the facilities as well.

This project is featured under the Ministry’s large-scale initiative of the “Maldives Clean Environment Project” and is funded by the World Bank. The initiative is currently being implemented in zone 2,4 and 5 of the Maldives.
