Government of Maldives Signs With ADB To Strengthen Gender Inclusive Initiatives Project

On Monday, the Ministry of Gender, Family & Social Services signed with the Asian Development Bank to strengthen the gender-inclusive initiatives project. Under this agreement, the bank would be providing a grant of USD 7 million to the ministry with an additional USD 2.5 million for technical assistance facilitated by the Government of Japan.

At the signing ceremony held yesterday, the agreement was signed on behalf of Maldives by the Minister of Finance, Ibrahim Ameer while the Director of Asian Development Bank, Dr Thiam Hee Ng represented the bank during the signing.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services, Aishath Mohamed Didi remarked that the ADB-funded project will help protect victims of domestic violence and reduce gender-based violence against women. Speaking further she stated that it will empower women as well and assist in increasing their engagement in social and economic activities.

The Gender Inclusive Initiatives project strives to achieve 5 main objectives during its 5-year period. This includes improving gender-based statistical research, formulating a responsive budget and training workers, enhancing social protection services, and building capability and reducing gender-based violence, increasing community involvement in helping victims and establishing three safe shelters. The three safe homes are planned to be established in Raa Atoll, Addu City and Hulhumale.

The Minister of Finance, Ibrahim Ameer commended the achievements made in securing gender equality in the Maldives and stated that the project will further assist in increasing gender and social inclusion. He also noted that a culture of empowerment needs to be built to end violence against women in society.
