MMWM Concludes Successful Migrant Worker’s Cricket Carnival 2022

Last week, the Mission for Migrant Workers Maldives (MMWM) in partnership with Ooredoo Maldives hosted this year’s edition of the Migrant Worker’s Cricket Carnival 2022. The one-day tournament took place at Ekuveni Grounds and saw 20 energetic teams participating this year. A Health Camp and a Legal Awareness Camp were also conducted on the sidelines of the carnival.

The opening ceremony of the carnival was graced by the High Commissioner of India, His Excellency Sri Munu Mahawar along with High Commissioner of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, His Excellency AMJ Sadiq, Chief Commercial Officer of Ooredoo Maldives, Mr. Hussain Niyaz and the Director of Sales & Distribution from Ooredoo Maldives, Mr. Sachin Sarna.  Additionally, the High Commissioner of Pakistan, His Excellency Vice Admiral Mohamed Fayaz, High Commissioner of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, His Excellency Rear Admiral Abul Kalam Azad took part in the closing ceremony together with other organization partners.

The cricket tournament which began with 20 teams eventually reached the finals where Friends Club Bangladesh faced off against Unity Cricket Club from Sri Lanka. After a heated and exhilarating final, Friends Club Bangladesh emerged victorious, bringing home this year’s trophy. Accolades were also given out to the best batter, fielder and bowler of the tournament closing the carnival on a good note. The tournament was officiated by the Cricket Board of Maldives.

The Health Camp was conducted with the help and support of numerous partners including WHO Maldives, the Society for Health Education, Medicos, Health Protection Agency and Life Support, and facilitated free medical screening for migrant workers. Moreover, the Legal and Awareness Camp carried out with partners Transparency Maldives, Public Interest Law Centre, International Organization for Migration and Human Rights Commission of the Maldives provided invaluable advice and awareness on various matters.

The carnival is held annually coinciding with the anniversary of the MMWM. The purpose of the carnival is to engage migrant workers in sports while utilizing the event to provide other necessary services and raise awareness. Additionally, it also allows the migrant community to partake and be included in the anniversary celebrations of MMWM.
