Two High Commissioners Present Credentials to the President of Maldives

On Tuesday, the High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore to the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Soo Kok Leng and the High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Admiral (Retired) Muhammad Fayyaz Gilani presented their credentials to the President of the Maldives, His Excellency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The ceremony took place in the President’s Office. Following the ceremony, both the high commissioners met with the President and spoke about their respective countries.

During the meeting with the High Commissioner of Singapore, the President congratulated Soo Kok Leng on his appointment and reaffirmed the long-standing bilateral relations between the countries, recalling the shared values and people-to-people contact. In this regard, the President highlighted that Singapore is a prominent development partner for the Maldives.

The President and the Singaporean High Commissioner also spoke on topics of mutual interest such as regional and international collaboration, trade and investment cooperation, tourism cooperation and climate adaptation. On this note, the High Commissioner acknowledged the President and his administration’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic and commended the Government on their successful management.

The meeting concluded with the High Commissioner and the President ascertaining their commitment to enhancing the bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the Maldives and Singapore. Maldives established diplomatic ties with Singapore on February 10th, 1975.

At the meeting with the High Commissioner of Pakistan, the President initially congratulated Admiral (Retired) Muhammad Fayyaz Gilani on his appointment. He then reflected on the historical relations between the two countries, solidified by mutual respect, understanding, shared values and the Islamic faith. With regard to this, the President conveyed his deepest sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of Pakistan on the devastating floods and consequent loss of lives that the country faced in the past few months.

Afterward, the President and High Commissioner discussed avenues to further strengthen cooperation at regional and global levels. This includes increasing cooperation in areas of common interest such as education, health, sports and defence. Before the meeting was concluded, the President and High Commissioner expressed hope of working closely together to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Maldives and Pakistan.
