Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted with the harbour development projects of the island of Finey in Haa Dhaalu Atoll and the island of Muli in Meemu Atoll. The contract agreements were signed yesterday between the Chief Executive Officer of MTCC, Ahmed Azim and the Director General of the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Fathimath Shaana Farooq.
Home to a population of approximately 606 people, Hdh. Finey is an agricultural island hosting a small population. The residents are now seeking to broaden their income source by introducing local tourism to the island. However, the lack of a contemporary harbour with modern facilities is a barrier to this ambitious vision. Hence, the development of the harbour by MTCC, will provide great access to the island and bring socio-economic prosperity to the residents.
Valued at MVR 47.26 Million, the harbour development project features many necessary works. This includes harbour basin dredging operations of a 35,484.26 cubic-metre area, construction of a 219.2m breakwater, 82m revetment, groynes works of a 25m area and the establishment of a ramp, harbour pavement, navigational aids and streetlights among other things.
M. Muli is the administrative capital of the Meemu atoll and is therefore a hub of various services in the Meemu Atoll. Many people travel to the island for administrative, health and financial purposes and the island is home to a number of government offices and institutions. MTCC is also currently undertaking the development of an airport on the island. The current harbour at the island is facing many problems due to wear and tear of the years.
Owing to these different reasons, Muli is deemed as a gateway to the Meemu atoll and hence stresses its importance to have a modern harbour on the island. Therefore, the harbour development of Muli will in the future bring numerous benefits to the residents and the entire atoll as well.
The scope of this project includes dredging operations of a 33,888 cubic metre area, construction of a 465.48m breakwater, 89.74m revetment, the establishment of a ramp and a concrete bridge as well as installation of harbour pavement, streetlights and navigational aids. By the time the project is completed, it will also feature an access platform for the high-speed Raajje Transport Link (RTL). The project is valued at MVR 65.55 Million.
