Three Ambassadors Present Their Credentials To The President

On Tuesday, three Ambassadors of their respective countries presented their credentials to the President of the Maldives, His Excellency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. At a ceremony held in the President’s Office, the three Ambassadors who presented their credentials were the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Her Excellency Bonnie Horbach, Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Algeria, His Excellency Abderrahmane Benguerrah and the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic, His Excellency David Emmanuel Puig Buchel.

Following the ceremony, the President met with each Ambassador at congratulated them on their appointment. He then spoke with them on ways to enhance and strengthen the bilateral and multilateral relations between the Maldives and their respective countries.

Speaking with the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic, the President highlighted the 12 years of stable diplomatic ties between the countries. They also ventured into topics of mutual interest such as promoting sustainable tourism, environmental cooperation and building disaster resilience.

During the meeting with the Algerian Ambassador, the President emphasized the common cultural values and the shared Islamic faith of the two countries. The Ambassador even noted the long-standing friendship and good relations between both countries and discussed areas of mutual interest and cooperation.

At the meeting with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the President expressed hope that the Dutch government would consider easing visa requirements for Maldivians. Afterward, President Solih talked about expanding cooperation in the fisheries sector and the potential of levitating tariffs on Maldivian fisheries exports.

Moreover, they also shed light on higher education and training opportunities for Maldivian students and exchanged dialogues on areas of mutual interest. This includes tourism, climate change adaptation and mitigation as well as regional security. Before concluding her meeting, the Dutch Ambassador stated that the private sector companies of the Netherlands have expressed hope of investing in the Maldives.

The meetings were all concluded with the President and the Ambassadors expressing hope to further strengthen bilateral ties between the countries during the Ambassadors’ tenure and working alongside them in their new roles.
