Maldives Chess Players Secures Gold Medals at an International Level Competition for the first time!

Chess might not be a mainstream sport in the Maldives, but we do have a set of very talented local chess players taking part in national level and international level competition who are recognized and celebrated.

‘South Asian Chess Festival for Cadets, Youth and Disabled Juniors 2020’ was a regional competition hosted by the South Asian Chess Council, after being registered with the International Chess Federation. The competition was held between 20th of November and 23rd of November, online. Chess players from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan took part in the competition apart of Maldives.

Maldivian chess members took part in the categories; Under 10 Open and Girls category, Under 12 Open and Girls category, Under 14 Open and Girls category, Under 16 Open and Girls Category and Under 18 Open and Girls category.

Several Maldivian players secured big wins; with Mariyam Mishka Migdaadh and Mariyam Laisa Abdul Rasheedh winning gold medals. This is also the first time gold medals have been achieved by Maldivian chess players at in international level competition.

Apart from this, silver medals were secured by two locals; Eekan Waleed and Nuha Rilwan. Additionally, Aishath Eva Hassan and Kiyaan Mohamed Usamath also won bronze medals.
