The central bank of the Maldives, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has re-printed the 50 Rufiyaa notes featuring the newly introduced Maldivian rufiyaa symbol. The new rufiyaa symbol comprises an additional horizontal stroke added to the Dhivehi alphabet letter ‘Raa’.
The re-printed 50 rufiyaa notes will have the symbol issued on both sides of the note. The symbol can be found at the top left corner on the front of the note as well as the top right corner of the back of the note along with the face values. The new notes also have an additional difference with the current Governor of MMA, Ali Hashim’s signature on the notes. The notes are dated 8th September 2022, (12th Safar 1444).
The central bank stated that the date of circulation of the notes will be shared at a later date. MMA designated a specific symbol for the Maldivian rufiyaa back in July of 2022 and is among the few countries in the world with their own official currency symbol. The symbol pays homage to the mother tongue of Maldivians by utilizing a letter from the Dhivehi alphabet ‘Thaana’.
The new monetary series was introduced for circulation in the Maldives in 2016 with contemporary safety and convenience upgrades. It is named the ‘Ran Dhiha Faheh’ note series.
