The Vice President Concludes Official Trip To Egypt

Yesterday, Vice President Faisal Naseem concluded his official trip to Egypt to attend the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The Vice President was accompanied on his trip by a high-level delegation of government officials including Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology, Aminath Shauna.

As part of his trip, the Vice President attended the opening ceremony of 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) and delivered the national statement on behalf of Maldives. During his speech, the Vice President called for global solidarity in the face of climate change and informed world leaders that it is futile for Maldives to respond effectively without global support. In this regard, he also highlighted that Maldives contributes a negligible amount to the causes of climate change despite its vulnerability to it.

Moreover, the Vice President met with various world leaders and high-level dignitaries while attending the conference. While speaking at the ‘Innovative Finance for Climate and Development’ high-level roundtable held on the margins of COP27, he urged the developed world to recognize their contributions to climate change and take responsibility. Additionally, the Vice President participated and addressed the high-level roundtable on ‘Climate Change and Sustainability of Vulnerable Communities’.

Furthermore, the Vice President Faisal Naseem delivered a keynote at the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and Vulnerable Group of 20 (V20) event held on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27).

Apart from the conference, the Vice President also paid a courtesy visit to the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Professor Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb. During the meeting with the Grand Imam, he assured the Vice President that he would offer more short-term training, scholarship opportunities and teachers to the Maldives. Before concluding his trip, the Vice President met with the Maldivian student body at Al-Azhar University as well.
