Consequent to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 across the country, the Maldivian government put a temporary stop to our renowned tourism industry which resumed on 15th of July, after relevant health authorities had declared it safe for foreign arrivals. Back then, things did not look all that good. We did not have a significant number of arrivals. Hence, when the Minister of Tourism revealed that the country was targeting to achieve 100k during the remainder of the year, it did not seem realistic at all. However, the tides have turned.
By the end of October, tourism was booming again, and it continues to do so. As we reach the end of November, statistics from Ministry of Tourism shows that 72,623 tourist arrivals have been recorded as of 28th November. This total ups to 455,470 tourist arrivals counting from 1st of January. The most number of tourist arrivals have been recorded from Russia, India and United Kingdom respectively, since the travel ban was lifted.
At this point, it is extremely likely that we could reach the 100k target by the end of December.
Presently, 371 tourist accommodation facilities are in operation accounting to a total of 34.336 beds. These includes of Resorts, Marinas, Hotels, Safari Vessels and Guesthouses.
Moreover, Maldives has been crowned as the World’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards 2020. This is remarkable achievement, considering the impacts the global coronavirus pandemic had on the tourism industry as a whole.
