Vice President Faisal Naseem Arrives in Egypt For COP27

 
Today, Vice President of the Maldives, His Excellency Faisal Naseem has arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt for the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference. The Vice President was accompanied on his visit by a high-level delegation of government officials.

This year’s edition of the UN Climate Change Conference encompasses three sessions. Namely, the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27), the 17th session of the Conference of Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP17) and also the 4th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Paris Agreement (CMA4).

The formal opening plenary of the conference is set to be held tomorrow, on the 6th of November 2022 at the Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Centre in Egypt. The COP27 is an important event for the Maldives and provides a platform for small-nation countries like the Maldives to address the country’s sustainable development plans on the international fora. In this sense, the Vice President will be delivering his national statement on the Maldives on the second day of the conference on 7th November 2022.

The Maldives is currently on an ambitious plan to reach net zero emissions by 2030. The Maldives has conducted several initiatives to address and bring attention to the climate emergency ranging from participating in multilateral institutions to various activities at the national level as well. The activities and initiatives are centered on highlighting the financial burden of resilience building and climate adaptation for less developed countries in the world.
