Waste Sorting Line To Be Installed In The Island Of Thilafushi

On Monday, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) and Parley Maldives to develop a waste sorting line in the island of Thilafushi in Kaafu Atoll. The waste sorting line will be installed at the Thilafushi Regional Resource Waste Management Facility.

Under the MoU, Parley will assist in designing and constructing the nation’s first waste sorting line designated for waste management and features the capacity to segregate mixed recyclables into metals, plastics and other materials. This would bring great ease to the current process where waste materials are separated before being transported to Thilafushi with WAMCO having to segregate mixed waste by hand.

Moreover, the waste sorting line would help cut down operational costs by increasing the speed of separation resulting in more waste-to-energy production. The plant that is planned to be built in Thilafushi can cater for 500 tons of waste with 10-12 Megawatts of electricity being generated using the waste.
