Yesterday, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) commemorated their 36th anniversary at a special function. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih attended the anniversary function and during his speech remarked that commercial ports are crucial to boost the economy and described ports as the cornerstones of economic activity in every country.
President Solih’s administration has been carrying out several port development projects across the country in an effort to diversify and increase economic activity. In this regard, the President stated that the completion of port expansion projects in Kulhudhuffushi City and Hitahdhoo Island will ease bulk transport of goods in those regions. He added that another port development project is underway in Gdh. Thinadhoo at the moment as well.
Speaking about the Male’ Commercial Harbour operations, President Solih said that the space restrictions hindering the smooth operation of the harbour will be resolved soon. He shared that the administration has already partly finished the land reclamation in Gulhifalhu which constitutes a part of the port relocation project.
The President also shared some exciting news that MPL is preparing to introduce some new services with the completion of the bulk terminal on Thilafushi island. The terminal comprises of facilities for construction sector raw material importers. In this manner, he further spoke about how relocation of port would decrease industrial activities in Male’ paving way for better use of land and minimize congestion.
He concluded his speech by acknowledging the diligent staff of MPL. President Solih also commented that staff concerns regarding the MPL housing project was duly noted and discussions have been held with the MPL management to provide a fruitful solution.
At the function, the President presented awards to 12 staff of MPL for long-term service and received a model of the port as a token of appreciation. The function also saw the launching of different services like the port community fund, job portal, staff mobile application and scholarships were awarded as well.
