This Year’s National Farmer’s Day And World Food Day To Be Marked In K.Kaashidhoo

Yesterday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declared that the official receptions for National Farmer’s Day and World Food Day will be hosted in the island of Kaashidhoo in Kaafu Atoll.

The declaration was made upon the recommendation of the cabinet at a cabinet meeting held yesterday. During the cabinet meeting, the President, Vice President and Ministers deliberated on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources & Agriculture before announcing the decision.

The first ever National Farmer’s Day was officially commemorated in the Maldives during President Solih’s administration on 15th October 2020. The purpose of celebrating the day is to acknowledge the diligent work of farmers and increase public interest in agriculture, one of the larger sectors in the Maldivian economy. The World Food Day is internationally marked the following day on 16th October of every year.

The consecutive placement of both the days together was a strategic decision which allowed events to be overlapped between the two days, giving farmers a platform to showcase their products. Moreover, it also serves the wider objective of bringing into light the instrumental contribution of farmers in ensuring food security in the country- a key theme for marking the international World Food Day.
